Michele Clapton is the visionary mastermind behind the beautiful costume fashion of the Game of Thrones series. We take a look at some of our favourite designs from the highly popular fantasy show.
The amazing fashion exhibited in Game of Thrones is a true testament to the incredible talent of Michele Clapton.
Many characters in the show have signature looks, with styles offering a glamorous nod to the likes of Alexander McQueen and Rick Owens. Funnel necks, Vionnet dresses and leather detailing are just some of the focal concepts explored by Michele, all encompassing strength, power and opulence. Michele’s work garnered her an Emmy Award in 2012 for her designs in season 2. She boasts an incredible CV, having designed costumes for ‘The Devils Whore’ and ‘Sense & Sensibility’.
With a new season officially underway, we thought we would take an indepth look at the signature looks in Game of Thrones
Cersei is one our favourite villains and one of fantasy’s best evil queens. As a ruler, we have grown to love her powerful dress sense together with bold aesthetics and feminine cuts.
Cersei is one our favourite villains and one of fantasy’s best evil queens. As a ruler, we have grown to love her powerful dress sense together with bold aesthetics and feminine cuts. The intricate embroidery adorned on her robes are as complicated as her character, with opulent dashes of gold fit for any queen. Her need for power is exemplified by her deep red gowns. However, being stripped of her power saw her character return to basic fabrics and muted hues.
Daenerys is one of the strongest, most in control women we know! She has worn a huge variety of beautiful costumes throughout the series, including silk dresses and tribal suits.
Daenerys has a clearly defined signature look. Her outfits are all about texture, and as ‘Mother of Dragons’ she needs to encompass power, strength, control and leadership. From Grecian-esque silk dresses and Dothraki tribal clothing to dragon scale inspired Khaleesi tops. Nearly always dressed in blue to pay tribute to her dead husband, Daenerys is all about functionality and understated beauty.
Margaery oozes effortless sex appeal and femininity, giving Cersei a run for her money! Low cut necklines and blue hues create a unique, signature look.
Billowing capes and shape defining bodices give a sense of armory with a glamorous feminine edge. Her daring outfits allow Margaery to use her femininity to increase intrigue towards her character, whilst also proving her as a seductress. Margaerys costumes have a fantastic air of modernity within the medieval setting and we absolutely love her cheeky serenity and grace.
Sansa is incredibly young and vulnerable, but we see her grow up incredibly quickly throughout the series. Her costumes are inspired by her environment, with various colours and fabrics.
As a young girl, it is no surprise that Sansa enjoys fairytale stories of knights and princesses. With billowing sleeves and classic cuts, Sansa looks truly feminine and wheres fine materials. Throughout the series we see her style develop into a more fashionable, polished overall aesthetic with beautiful upholstery and a wider range of colours include purple and deep shades of green. Her wedding dress displays her wealth and importance, with amazing gold fabric and padding to create a womanly silhouette. Sansa’s costumes cleverly depict her personality, her location and her role in the society.
